  • Advice on air filtration!

I see this condition too often, the wrong type of filter can cost you sooooo much money!

I know some people are highly sensative to allergens, but your Air Conditioning system does not have to suffer. If your unit does not have a variable speed fan, and you are using any filter other than spun glass, or poly, you are choking your air conditioner.

FACT:Other filters do not provide enough air flow,  they can cause drastic decrease in perfomance while costing more in utility consumption.

If the system does not have variable speed fan, it is designed to work with very little resistance to air flow, when you install a filter that is too dense, the air flow is decreased, and the problems start. First of all you notice that the house is getting warmer than usual in the summer time. You call out a technician that supposedly knows what he is doing. Your first clue that he doesn't - he neglects to check the air filter before opening up the unit.  Second - because of the reduced air flow, the unit appears to be low on refrigerant, so he starts adding refrigerant to bring the pressure up, scratching his head, he wonders why this is not working, meanwhile, the head pressure is becoming way to high. Now, a unit that had a perfect charge prior to his visit, is way overcharged. This causes high current, very little cooling, frozen evaporator coil, poor air circulation, capicators could start popping, and you could lose the compressor. Simply changing the type of filter could have fixed the entire problem without the added expense.

Recommendation: If you are using a filter that is hypoallergenic, pleated, or you cannot literally see through your filter. Change it prior to calling a service technician. If the unit is not producing any air flow, and you can hear the fan running. Turn it off. inspect the copper lines on the outdoor unit for ICE. If ice is found let the unit set in the off position for 4- 5 hours. Then turn only the fan on, this can be done by moving the fan switch from AUTO to the ON position. Check for air flow coming from the vents. If you have air flow, turn the fan back to AUTO, and turn on the A/C as usual. If the filter was the problem ice will not form on the copper lines again.

So what do I do if I am sensative to allergens?

Again, I recommend the spun glass or poly filters, but I would treat them with Pura Clean Fitler Spray. This is not an adhesive, or a messy oil, it applys a static charge to the fibers of the filter and increases it's performance up to 300% without reducing air flow, and there are no harmful chemicals to worry about.

Pura Clean Filter Spray will soon be available here!

  • Ultraviolet Lights

Concerned about flu viruses, bacteria, and microbes? Add U/V lights to your evaporator coil!

The evaporator coil is a great place for bacteria etc. to hang out and multiply. It is warm, dark, and damp. An ideal place for bacteria to grow. U/V lights effect the reproduction of the cells. It is like giving them an extreme suntan, literally making them unable to reproduce. Therefore they just die before they multiply, making your home less contagious when there are airborne viruses in the home, because they are less likely to keep recirculating through the duct work.
